These abstract, flowing pieces are a release from the rigid, mathematical projects I’ve worked on practicing architecture. As an artist, I find calmness in the intangible energy around me, where my mind can escape and my body can flow freely. These pieces are process based, with an end result up to the journey taken and the viewer’s own perspective.

The painting pieces developed from layers of calming tones, diluted color, and free flowing strokes. I encourage viewers to find forms within the pieces for their own imagination wonder.

The ceramic pieces are also the result of continuous experimenting and play in my studio. I enjoy the endless ways you can create with clay and glaze. These particular pieces are made with marbling glaze through a bubble glaze technique. After a base coat of glaze is applied, a contrasting color is combined with soap and blown into bubbles that pop around the piece, leaving a marbled-like imprint. The result is an organic type of liquid air design. Placed on functional pieces, this technique creates an interesting juxtaposition between the practical and play.

I hope my pieces provide an escape for others as it does for me — find your flow and pop of life.”

JONATHAN WISTHOFF IN GALLERY II

“My work since I Began in 2012 has been centered around the prairie and its agricultural history.  It is in a small way my way of preserving the history of North Dakota and the buildings that are slowly disappearing. My inspiration comes from the amazing North Dakota skies and the structures that dot the landscape.  I can drive by an old farmstead a hundred times, then catch it in a certain light or season and I will say to myself, “now that’s a painting”.

Although I have tried several paint mediums, oil paint is my preferred paint to use.  This allows me to blend colors on the canvas vs. having every color mixed on the pallet.  I paint mostly on hard board and I occasionally use stretched canvas.  One of my favorite items to find at antique stores are old frames for displaying my paintings.  Most of the time they are not in perfect condition, much like the buildings in my paintings.

I have a passion for art and the creative process.  Art is a necessary part of my life and whether it is painting, music, sculpting, pottery or carving, it helps me appreciate the beauty God created and to try and capture it on canvas or in clay.”

“I am obsessed with color, line and texture. My journey through the years has included many different mediums, starting with fabric.  I began with making my own clothes. Fabric led to quilting, beading, cross stitch, knitting, painting, drawing, welding, and mosaic work. I love the process of creatinG; taking an idea and bringing it to fruition.” - Diane Beirwagen
