Motherhood is my greatest inspiration for my recent artwork! Creating; like motherhood, is messy and can be hectic! When you step back from what you're working on and take it in as a whole, it's a beautiful reflection of the effort you put in!

For years I tried to only make my paintings exactly how I had planned them. I would spend hours striving for perfection. Once I became a mother to 2 amazing BOYS, I realized there is a certain beauty in the mess of it all. In my work I love playing with the yin and yang of nature versus surrealism.

Relaxing my style and embracing the mess; the drips and splatters, the unexpected bold colors versus black and white, I found where my painting style really became my own.

“My work is a personal adventure. I rarely begin with an idea in mind or a plan.

I almost always start with a few quick lines and go from there. Eventually the piece takes form to me and shapes itself into something more familiar, an eye or maybe a foot.

Everything begins to fall and flow into place in a very organic manner. The end product could be anything. Art to me is a journey to make nothing into something.

It is my way of finding peace with all the Thoughts in my head and the busy world around me.

It doesn’t always have to make sense. Sometimes it just is.”

EMMA IS a high school art teacher and artist. SHE studied fine art and art education at the University of North Dakota, graduaTING in the Fall of 2020 and hAS been teaching at Williston High School for 3 years.

sHE SAYS, “During the Covid Pandemic, I was stuck at home, and I started experimenting with paint to pass the time. I was always drawn to reflections and painting more challenging objects and perspectives. In the midst of lockdown, I created my first balloon painting for my sister and from there it grew and bloomed into its own wonderful thing. This show has become a study of foil balloons, color, and remembering to have fun when making art.”
